He married Mary Louise Detwiler on June 14, 1945 in Takoma Park, Maryland. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Gilbert Lenell Jr. born 1947, Austin Charles born 1951, Virginia Pearl born 1953, Howard Thomas born 1960 and Carol Marie born 1965.

He was a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. From 1951 to 1958 he and his wife served in Salem, Tazewell and Kilmarnock, Virginia. From 1958 to 1969 they spent their most memorable and challenging years as missionaries in the African countries of Nyasaland, Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo. After returning to the United States they served from 1969 to 1982 in Weslaco, Texas; Jasper, Tennessee; and Lisbon, Ohio. They went back to Africa and worked in Malawi from 1982 to 1984. On returning to the United States Gilbert changed his profession and served as a personal secretary to Senator John Cooper in Washington, DC until his retirement in 1991.

On retiring the couple first spent several years in Ringgold, Georgia and then moved to Laclede, Missouri. They have been living here near their youngest daughter Carol since 1999.

In addition to being an avid reader, "Red" also enjoyed woodworking in his workshop. He was known as "Grandpa" or "Papa" to his grandchildren, with whom he particularly enjoyed spending time. He is remembered by most for his sense of humor and teasing nature. He remained active in the Marceline Seventh-day Adventist Church, of which he was a member, until the time of his death.
