Cyrus was the only child born to Lindorff Butts and Mary Jane Akers Butts. When Cyrus was one year old his father left Adams County IL as a private with the Union Army. His father died in the Civil War when Cyrus was 26 months old. His mother remarried in 1865 and Cyrus was raised with half-siblings. He married Katie Rockenfield March 27, 1884 in Columbus, IL. They had five children, four of whom survived childhood. Cyrus left the farmlands of Illinois about 1911 and briefly lived with is family near Lewiston MT before moving to California where he lived the remainder of his life. His wife died thirteen months before he joined her.
