Melvin Davis Allen Jr., 77, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Owensboro, Ky.

He was born June 22, 1922, in Wolf Creek, Ky. His parents were M.D. Allen Sr. and Viola Jane (Willoughby) Allen. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley LaFountaine of Indianapolis and Jean Doty of Greenwood; one brother; William Allen of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Mabel Davies of Brandenberg, Ky.; one half sister, Jessie Reed of Rineyville, Ky.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Braxton Allen; and a great-grandson, Dalton Mills.

He was a musician all of his life and was a life member of the Indianapolis Musicians Union. In Indianapolis, he played with Big Moe and Boyd Bennett. They made a Gold Record called "Seventeen" in the late 1950s. He also traveled and played in a band with Vaughn Monroe, Tex Justice and PeeWee King. He also entertained at the Thunderbird Club in Indianapolis for several years.

He was of Methodist faith.

The Rev. William Pearson will conduct a service at noon Saturday at Litchfield United Methodist Church in Litchfield, Ky. Burial will be at Laymon Cemetery in Caneyville, Ky.
