Chico Enterprise, Friday Evening, October 6, 1899: "Tragic Death At Paradise. John Beardan Killed by a Vicious Horse. His Neck Broken by a Kick. Deputy Coroner Collins Leaves for the Scene of the Accident and Will Bring the Body to Chico. Deceased Leaves a Wife and Children.

"Meagre details of a fatal accident near Paradise were received early this morning by Deputy Coroner Collins, the victim of the accident being John Beardan, an employe of Dr. C.A. Oliver.

"From the limited details received it appears that Beardan was engaged in harnessing his team preparatory to hitching up for the day's work, when one of the horses suddenly kicked viciously, striking Beardan on the head and breaking his neck.

"Deputy Coroner Collins and undertaker Edgar left at 10 o'clock for the scene of the accident and will bring the remains here.

"Several years ago Beardan was a resident of Chico and was in the employ of Matt Schwein. He leaves to mourn his untimely death a wife and three children. He was about 45 years of age."
