June 9, 1856; came west in March, 1879, locating first at Marengo, Ill., and removed to Hampshire, Ill., In April, 1882, and established what is known as the Kane County Bank, of which he has been the owner since 1885; also has an interest in the mercantile establishment of Backus & Sisley, and in the firm of Backus & Sholes, manufacturers of brick and tile; elected member of the State Legislature in 1900, and again in 1902; married Jan. 1, 1884, Miss Emma L. Sisley, and they have one son, Charles S.

Hon . C . H . Backus Died at Home in Hampshire

C . H . Backus , founder of the state bank of Hampshire and a former member of the state legislature , died early Monday morning at his home in Hampshire , following an illness of two years . Mr . Backus was born in Chaplin , Conn ., on June 9 , 1856 , and had lived in Hampshire since 1882 . He founded the state bank of Hampshire that year and was actively connected with it until failing health forced him to retire . He was also actively interested in politics many years ago and served one term from that district in the Illinois legislature . Surviving him are a widow , Mrs . Emma L . Backus , a son , Charles S . Backus , and a daughter , Dorothy L . Backus . Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o clock from the Methodist Episcopal church at Hampshire . The Rev . W . W . Maxwell and the Rev . A . W . Hetrick officiated and burial was in Hampshire Center cemetery .
