He also purchased (RR) 40 acres SESW, Sec. 32, Twp. 10N, Rg. 05E in Shelby County for $320, June 3, 1874, Vol 794, p 183. John donated some of his land and built a school, named
Mound School. Next to the school he gave land for the Mound cemetery where he and Eliza are buried along with many of their descendants. In the early days Sunday School as well as burial services were held in the Mound School Building
John was one of the "49er's" who traveled west about 1849 for the legendary Gold Rush in California. Eliza and the children remained in Illinois.
Last name found as "Bails", "Beals", "Bales", or "Bailes". 1850 US Census of Yolo Co (now Nevada Co), CA gives his age as 23 years -> dob = 1827. ????
John and Eliza first lived on the Schnorf place (S W 1/4, S 28), then moved to Shelby Co, near Stewardson.
