Man Succumbs after Two
Weeks' Illness
_____

Frederich W. Bakenhus, aged 60, well known business man of De Queen, died at his home here Monday at 9 a.m., following an illness of 12 days. Mr. Bakenhus' death came as a distinct shock to the community. He had suffered an attack of influenza, following which he developed pneumonia in both lungs. For a time his condition had been regarded as critical but apparently he had passed the crisis and just prior to his passing chances for his recovery had seemed favorable.

Deceased was a native of Germany, having been born at Hagel, State of Oldenburgh, on June 11, 1867. When 20 years old he graduated from a School of Forestry and entered the German Forestry Service. In April 1888, he left the Forestry service and emigrated to America, landing at New York. He first made his home in Wisconsin, moving later to Omaha, Neb., and then to Texas. He came to De Queen in 1912, and soon afterward established the De Queen Shoe Store, which business he conducted successfully until his last illness. He was a member of the Lutheran church, with which he affiliated in early life.

Deceased was married to Miss Dora Stephenson of De Queen on September 27, 1921. His widow and one son, Lamar, age 5, survive. Two brothers and a sister in Germany and several cousins in Nebraska and Wisconsin also are living.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. F.N. Brewer of Texarkana, a close personal friend of the deceased, paid touching tribute to his memory. The Rev. R.H. Cannon, pastor of the De Queen Methodist church, and the Rev. J.F. Queen, pastor of the De Queen Baptist church, assisted in the services. Interment was made at Redmen cemetery, these services being in charge of the Masons. Pallbearers were W.H. Wardlaw, R.D. Huskins, A.B. Gardner, C.C. Ray, E.K. Edwards and L.D. McCown. De Queen's business houses were closed for the funeral services.
