Recorded in the published "History of Salisbuy" by John Moseley Weeks,Middleburry,Vt,1860,is the story of the unusual circumstances of the 1826 marriage of, Elizabeth Kelsey and her first husband,Jonathan Titus (1799-1834).Elizabeth Kelsey and Jonathan Titus had set a date to be married in 1826 but were forced to permanently postpone their wedding due to the un- timely death of Elizabeth's two year old brother,George G Kelsey (1824-1826).Sept 29,1826 was the day of young George Kelsey's funeral at Salisbury's West Cemetery.After the last rights were given at George's grave side,Elizabeth Kelsey's father,Gamaliel Kelsey suggested that Elizabeth and ,Jonathan be married right then.So without further discussion and no objections the impromptu nuptials had been arranged. Officiating at the wedding was Methodist minister,Rev Prindle who had just read the rights for Elizabeth's brother,George Kelsey's funeral.Standing at the head of young George's grave was,Rev Prindle and at the foot were,Elizabeth Kelsey and Jonathan Titus .The couple were then joined in marraige.The wedding was later described as: "A Wedding among the Tombs". A quite unusual event to be sure, but for those in attendance at the time,it was not deemed improper.
Elizabeth and Jonathan took residence in Salisbury ,Vermont.Eight years later on June 20,1834,Jonathan Titus dies.Five years latter in Bridport,Vermont the widowed,Elizabeth Titus remarries second to the widower,William Franklin Lee on Oct 7,1839.William dies on Oct 19,1859.For the next nine years,Elizabeth remains a widow for the second time before she marries her third husband from Gardner,Massachusetts,Pearson Cowee,on Jan 16,1868.Person Cowee was a machinist who manufactured chair stock for furniture.In the 1870 Federal Census for Gardner,Massachusetts,Elizabeth Cowee is at home with her husband,Person Cowee.Also present that day was,Elizabeth's niece,Elizabeth Augusta Howe. Miss Howe ,a music teacher, was the daughter to Elizabeth Kelsey Cowee's sister,Pasiphae Jane Kelsey Howe.
Six years later her second husband,Pearson Cowee dies in July of 1876.The widowed,Elizabeth Cowee returns home to Salisbury Vermont and most likely lives out the rest of her life living with family members in Salisbury,Vermont.
Elizabeth Kelsey Cowee dies on Feb 13,1880 in Salisbury, Vermont.Her burial takes place at Bridport Central Cemetery in Bridport,Addison County,Vermont.Her second husband,William Franklin Lee is also buried there.
