Evelyn Clayton Speake (1925 - 2011)

Evelyn Clayton Speake, 86, a retired teacher, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at a local care facility. For several years she had suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Clement-Keel Funeral Home in Gainesville. Interment: Spring Creek Cemetery in Cooke County. Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday.

Evelyn was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Pontotoc County, Okla., to Walter and Ethel Caton Clayton. Her father was a veteran of World War I and later served as the postmaster in Byng, Pontotoc County. Evelyn was educated in the rural schools in the area and graduated at the head of her class from Hickory High School. She attended East Central Oklahoma College, receiving a BA degree. Her major was music. After college, she taught music in the Pampa ISD and directed the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Pampa. In 1956, the family moved to Tarrant County, where her husband was a teacher and school principal in the Birdville ISD. Evelyn joined him as an aide in the special education department for another 10 years in education. She sang in the choir of St. Philip's Presbyterian Church and directed the choir when the director's position was vacant. Evelyn's passion was music and education. She participated in both as long as she could. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sister, June Crumb of Allen, Okla.; and brother, John Clayton of Potomac, Md.

Survivors: Husband, Claude Speake of Richland Hills; daughter, Claudia and husband, Richard Dickson, of Haltom City; son, Paul and his wife, Elisabeth, of Wister, Okla.; and grandchildren, Amanda and Rebecca Dickson, Philip and Lydia Speake, and Dr. Joseph and his wife, Dr. Cheryl Speake.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Funeral services for Evelyn Speake, 86, of North Richland Hills are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb, 26 at Clement-Keel Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell McIntyre, Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating.

Interment will follow in Spring Creek Cemetery under the direction of the Clement-Keel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Speake died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 at Manor Care in North Richland Hills.

She was born January 13, 1925 in Ada, Okla.

Survivors include her husband, Claude Speake of North Richland Hills; daughter, Claudia Dickson of Haltom City; son, Paul Speake of Wister, Okla. and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1-2 pm before the service.
