Explorer. Born in Horten, Norway, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1923 and gained citizenship in 1929. In the 1930s, he took part in Richard E. Byrd's expeditions to the South Pole and in 1939, he served as Byrd's executive officer helping discover one thousand miles of new coastline. After serving several years in the US Navy Reserves, gaining the rank of Captain, he returned to Antarctica with support of the American Geographical Society. The Ronne Antarctica Expedition 1946 to 1948, covered 3,600 miles by ski and dog sled, mapped the Weddell Sea coastline setting a number of polar records more than any other explorer in history. In the 1950s, Ronne became the scientific and military leader for a U.S. Weddell Sea base. The Ronne ice shelf of Antarctica was named after him.
