Merle Robert "Bud" Swanson, age 76, died Friday evening, January 7, 2011, at his home in Battle Creek surrounded by his family. Bud was born on February 8, 1934, in Fostoria, Ohio. He was the son of Harold A. Swanson and Ruth L. Swanson-Venn.

He worked 40 years at Swanson's Cookie Company, later renamed Archway Cookies. He retired in the 1980s as Vice President of Sales and Merchandising. Bud attended Battle Creek Central High School and left school to join the Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. After an honorable discharge from the military, he attended Argubright Business College.

Bud loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and hunting. His hunting buddies always knew he'd be cooking up a large breakfast for them before the morning hunt. He was a hobby farmer who enjoyed growing large vegetable gardens, field crops, maintaining fruit orchards, raising livestock and running a roadside vegetable and pumpkin stand in Bedford. He played softball, enjoyed bowling, was an avid golfer and loved to travel and attend his children and grandchildren's school and sports activities. He performed volunteer work for the area Catholic Schools, Lion's Club, Boy Scouts, and Little League.

Bud was a humble man who expressed generosity to many without seeking recognition; he touched a lot of people's lives. On January 14, 1956, he was united in marriage to Charlene M. Skidmore at St. Philip Catholic Church, and she survives. Also surviving are four children, Leah (Michael) Worthington of Delton, Tina Swanson (Ken Gehrman) of Delton, Robert (Carol) Swanson of Columbia, MD, and Rodney (Julie) Swanson of Swartz Creek; two sisters, Jacquelyn Nouveau of Chapel Hill, NC, and Shirley Townsend of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Swanson; his mother, Ruth Swanson-Venn; his sister, Dora Denniston; and a son, Randy J. Swanson.

The family will receive friends at Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Thursday, January 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 14, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church with Rev. Father Mathew Manalel.

Interment will be at the Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. Memorial contributions in Bud's memory can be made to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice. Arrangements by the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service. (269)788-9800
