Matthias had helped with supply stocks at the Toronto docks during the Franco-American War of 1797. He died at the Battle of York, during the War of 1812 when an American force, along with a naval flotilla, landed on the west shore of York, Upper Canada, capturing the town and dockyard.
Matthias was a shipbuilder and a private in the 1st Regiment York Militia. He happened to be at the dock when the British forces blew up their own powder supply at the York Garrison in an attempt to save its capture by the advancing American forces.
His leg was badly injured in the rock fall of the explosion and required amputation. He died later of infection and was the first to be buried in the town cemetery called "Thornhill".
