Born in Kungsholmen district in Stockholm, Axel Herman Ostling left Sweden as a young teenager to "sail the seven seas". He became a ship's carpenter. He worked out of Liverpool, England and New York City. His brother, John Herman Ostling, lived in Manhattan as found on the 1900 Census.
Axel met Hilma Kristina Nordell as a passenger coming to America. They married and settled first in Denver, Colorado, where Harold Olaf Ostling was born. They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota were twins, Esther Hedvig Ostling and Edward Herman Ostling, and later Roy Vernon Ostling was born. The family moved to Seattle where Axel built the home at 4007 Bagley Street in the Wallingford district. Axel and Hilma lived there until their deaths.
