WAUSAUKEE, Wis. - While surrounded by his loving family and friends, Wayne "Swede" passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the age of 81.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Schiefen) of 49 years; three sons, Randy, Lance and Brittan (Rusty); and his parents, Melvin and Flossie (Helton) Monsen.
Wayne is survived by two loving daughters, Suzette (Jim) Miller of Milwaukee and Candie (Bill) Fisher of Gillett, Wis. and daughter-in-law, Martha (Lance) Monsen of Miami.
Wayne will be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren, Tana (Jay) Myhre, Seth Montgomery, Shana Wojcik, Matthew Miller, Jonathan Monsen, Adam Miller and Nick Monsen, and his six great-grandchildren, Samantha and Brady Myhre, Trinity and Aria Wojcik, and Jackson and Makenna Montgomery.
Wayne had countless friends. He was a warm and giving man and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Swede graduated from Pembine High School in 1948. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a flight engineer including missions in the Berlin Air Lift, Korean War and Vietnam.
After 23 years of service, he and Betty moved to Peshtigo where he owned and operated Swede's Standard Station. Several years later, Betty and Wayne moved to Pembine, Wis. and owned Swede's Place Bar and Restaurant and Swede's Garage. They relocated to Milwaukee and worked for Doug Rohde Grading Co. for 17 years finally coming home to his boyhood family farm in Dunbar, Wis.
Wayne loved living in Dunbar and spending time with family and friends. He loved to snowmobile and help people.
During this time, Swede was very active with the Pembine Volunteer Fire Department, Dunbar Sportsmens Club, American Legion, Sergeants Association and loved to volunteer to work at the annual Pembine Picnic Horse-Pull Competition as the whistle blower for 35 years.
He also was a great "cake baker" for the senior citizens luncheons. Recently, the new pavilion at the Dunbar Veteran's Memorial Park was named in his honor by the township.
Family will greet friends on Saturday, Feb. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Pembine followed by a funeral service honoring "Swede's" life at 2 p.m. with a reception following.
Interment will be in Memorials Gardens Cemetery in Dunbar
