DUBLIN - Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Dublin on Sunday, December 9, at 2P.M. for Dr. John Allen Bell, Jr., who died on Friday, December 7. Interment will follow at Northview Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 6:30 until 8:00P.M.
A native of Emanuel County, John Allen Bell, Jr. was the son of the late Daisy Fountain Bell and John Allen Bell. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Beech, and Mrs. Grace Horton; three brothers, Dr. Arlis Bell, Ray Bell and Willard Bell; and his first wife, Ellen Claxton Bell.
After finishing high school in Swainsboro, he attended Emory University as a pre-med student, later transferring to the Medical College of Georgia from which he was graduated in 1934. He then entered a rotating internship which lasted until he came to Dublin on September 1, 1935, to practice at the Claxton Sanitorium where he remained until its closing on April 1, 1980, except for his service in the U.S. Army in World War II as medical officer of the Officers' Convalescent Hospital in England, part of the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel and awarded the bronze star. The army stint lasted from December 4, 1940 until February 23, 1945, when her returned to Claxton Hospital.
During his 65 years of medical practice, he was active in many professional, educational, church and civic associations. He served as president of the Laurens County Medical Society and of the Sixth District Medical Society. He was a charter member of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and received recognition by the Academy by being named a Fellow. He was also named a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society. He belonged to the Medical Association of Georgia, which presented him with a 50-year pin and certificate when he was named Family Physician of the Year. He was a member of the Southern Medical Association and of the American Medical Associa- tion and received special recognition for his service with the American Academy of Family Physicians Student Preceptorship Program.
Mr. Bell was president of the Seaboard Railway Surgeons, chairman of the Medical Association of Georgia Legislative Committee, a member of the Governor's Advisory Committee of Mental Institutions, and a member of the Eighth Congressional District of Georgia Special Advisory Staff. He also served as president of the Georgia Association of Nursing Home Directors.
After the closing of Claxton Hospital on April 1, 1980, he served as chairman of the Hospital Authority of Laurens County and as president of the Dublin Medical Arts Center. He was a member of the staff of Laurens Memorial Hospital and later the Fairview Park Hospital. He served on the Laurens County Board of Health and as medical director of the Dublinair Nursing Home and of Laurens Convalescent Center.
In 1963 he was named to the State Board of Regents of the University of Georgia and served as vice chairman from 1972 until 1974 when he was named chairman. In 1977, he became Regent Emeritus.
From 1958 to 1984, he was a member of the City of Dublin Board of Education, serving as chairman, and was an honorary member of the Georgia Schools Board Association. He was on the boards of the Georgia College Foundation and of the Middle Georgia College Foundation and was instrumental in securing the Dublin Center of the University of Georgia.
As a member of First United Methodist Church, he worked in many capacities, being on the building committee and the Board of Stewards, of which he was chairman.
In 1968 he was named Man of the Year of the St. Patrick's Festival, the first to be selected. He was awarded the Golden Book of Deeds from the Exchange Club of Dublin. He was elected to the Gridiron Society of the University of Georgia and to the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Kappa Honorary Medical Society at the Medical College of Georgia.
He served as a director of the Morris State Bank and of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce. He held membership in the Dublin Rotary Club, the Dublin Elks Lodge, the Dublin Country Club and the Order of Shillelah.
While president of the Claxton Family Reunion, he instituted the Claxton Family Scholarship Fund.
The Bell family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice if Laurens Co., P.O. Box 31040 or First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 665, Dublin, GA 31040, in memory of Dr. Bell would be appreciated.
