The 1855 NY census shows that Nathan Carpenter was born in Saratoga County, NY.

Nathan was an active member of the Brackel M.E. church, which once stood next to this abandoned cemetery.

A biography of son Caleb provides information about Nathan and his family. The following is from "Historical Souvenir of El Dorado County, California" which was published in 1883:

"CALEB GARDNER CARPENTER, Of Diamond Springs, is a son of Nathan and Sibyl Carpenter, of Chenango county, New York. There were five children who lived to maturity, viz: Maria, Nancy, George, Exana and the subject of this sketch, who worked on a farm, in a saw-mill and in a carding mill, in which branches of trade his father was engaged."

In Find-A-Grave, Maria Bourne is #98982589; Exana Bolster is 30938238; Caleb G. Carpenter is 67734629. The grave of George W. Carpenter has not been found, but his wife Lydia Ann Rathbun Carpenter is 73014624. The fate of Nancy Carpenter has not been traced.

Death records on familysearch suggest an additional daughter, Phoebe M. Johnson, d Jan 18, 1892. Her parents were listed as Nathan Carpenter and Sibel Hill. Phebe M. Johnson is grave 40267273.

Nathan had married his second wife, Dorcas, by the time of the 1855 NY census.

(Here is the original biography for this grave, perhaps added by J.Livermore: "His wife Sybel Hill died July 18, 1851 in Pitcher, aged 54 yrs. I suspect she is buried here also. His 2nd wife Dorcas is to the left.")
