50 years old, Anthony James ALDERSON born Darlington Durham England and christened at Haughton Le Skerne Durham England on the 21 January 1821.

Anthony and his large family embarked for New Zealand on the ship 'Berar' on the 15th October 1874 from London and arrived in Wellington harbour, New Zealand on the 22nd January 1875.

Anthony and his wife Cicely who was pregnant with their eleventh child by just a few weeks and their ten children:

The Alderson family were to sail on board the ship 'Cospatrick' but were transferred to the Berar at the last moment as the Cospatrick was fully booked. This saved their lives as the Cospatrick burned and only five persons survived.

Anthony (father), Mary, Sarah, Phoebe and James all had scarlet fever. Everyone but Anthony survived. Cicely and the children moved to Wellington and had to live on hardly any money due to it being stolen while they were quarantined.

Anthony's death was due to scarlatina (scarlet fever) but he died from pneumonia at the Somes Island quarantine infirmary on the 2 February 1875 and was buried on the 3 February 1875.

Anthony James the youngest son never fully recovered completely, he died 20 Mar 1875 Wellington, New Zealand. Buried 21 March 1875 at the Bolton Street Cemetery, cause of his death 'Marasmus' a chronic wasting of body tissues, especially in young children, commonly due to prolonged dietary deficiency of protein and calories.
