Angina Pectoris proves fatal to member of Syracuse pioneer family--last rites to be held Monday

Mrs. Grace Gere Soule, wife of Frank Chandler Soule, former president of the Merrill-Soule company, a leader in welfare work in Syracuse, died of a heart ailment early Friday morning at her home, 1100 James Street. She was 72 years old.
Mrs. Soule had been suffering from angina pectoris since August.
Mrs. Soule was born Dec. 2, 1862, the daughter of William H. H. Gere, who was superintendent of the State Salt Works, and Octavia Frances Cady Gere. Her childhood home was in Geddes.
She was married to Mr. Soule Nov 12, 1884, and the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year with a large reception at their James Street home. it was an invariable custom for Mrs. Soule to summer at the Soule country estate of 1,000 acres 30 miles from Syracuse, on the north shore of Oneida Lake. The estate, one of Central New York's show places, is called Vanderkamp.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Soule home by the Rev. Dr. A.C. Fulton, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles. Dr. Fulton is a former pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, of which Mrs. Soule was a member. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
Two sons, Oscar F. and Robert G. and five grandchildren survive. They are Frank Channing Soule, 2nd, Miss Dorothy B. Soule, Hendrick Holden Soule, Robert Gere Soule Jr., and Miss Grace Gere Soule.
Mrs. Soule took an active interest in the welfare of Syracuse. She was a trustee of Syracuse Memorial Hospital for 20 years and treasurer of Harmony Circle, an auxiliary of Memorial Hospital. In addition, she was a member of the Syracuse Rose Society, the Syracuse Garden Club and the Woman's Exchange.
Mrs. Soule came from pioneer Central New York stock. Her grandfather, Robert Gere, was one of the earliest settlers in what was to become the city of Syracuse. He was superintendent of the State Salt Works, a position to which his son, Mrs. Soule's father, succeeded. She received her education in the Syracuse schools.
The Merrill-Soule Company, of which Mr. Soule was president for many years, was internationally known for the manufacture of condensed mince meat under the "None Such" brand and for the manufacture of powdered milk under the trade name of "Klim".
This company was absorbed about 10 years ago by the Borden Company.

Mrs. Frank C. Soule

The death of Grace Gere Soule, wife of Frank C. Soule, the president of the Merrill-Soule Company, is a source of sorrow to the many Syracusans who were familiar with her matronly virtues and with her modest but always earnest interest in local institutions dedicated to social and civic welfare.
A home-loving matron of retiring disposition, and a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Soule was inspired by her warm sympathies and spirit of helpfulness to lend her unselfish aid and energy to varied organizations for beneficent service and communally well-being. Her long official associations with the Syracuse Memorial Hospital and its affiliated Harmony Circle, and her active membership in the local Rose Society, Garden Club and Woman's Exchange were notable examples of her womanly zeal for good causes and city advancement. Her sincerity in these and other cooperative missions was not the less understood and praised by those within the range of her personal friendship because it was quietly and unobtrusively manifested.
