Death of J. L. Bagg
He was the oldest lawyer in Onondaga County

James Lawrence Bagg of No. 402 James street, an old and esteemed resident of this city for more than sixty years, passed away at 11:30 o'clock yesterday morning He had been apparently in good health until the evening previous, when he complained of pains in the region of the heart. Drs. David Totman and William H. Mills were summoned, but despite their efforts death came yesterday morning.
Mr. Bagg was 86 years old and was the oldest lawyer in Onondaga County. He was born in Lanesboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, September 27, 1815. He attended the district school there and later entered Union College at Schencetady, where he was graduated in 1827. He was the founder of the Onondaga County Savings bank and acted as vice president and attorney until 1877. He was married August 28, 1844 to Miss Mary E. Redfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Redfield. He was a well known temperance advocate and president of the New York State Temperance Society.
He was the oldest member of the University Club, a charter member of the Century Club and of the Onondaga Historical Association, and the oldest member of the Syracuse Bar Association.
He is survived by one child, Mrs. E. H. Merrell, a grandson, Lawrence Merrell, a sister, Miss E.L. Bagg and these brothers: Stanley G. Bagg, Dr. Henry C. Bagg of Los Angeles CA, and Charles C. Bagg of East Syracuse.
His funeral will be held from his home, No. 402 James street, at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon.
