US Congressman, Maryland Governor, US Diplomat. Twice was elected to represent Maryland's 4th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1847 to 1851, then from 1879 to 1883. Served as Governor of Maryland from 1884 to 1885. Served as United States Minister to Mexico from 1859 to 1860, and United States Minister to France from 1885 to 1889.
