ROCK ISLAND — Charles L. Gordon, Sr., 83, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at Trinity Bettendorf.

In accordance with his wishes, his body will be cremated.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2011, at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, with visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, with honors bestowed by American Legion Posts 569 and 200 and VFW Post 1303.

Charles was born on May 22, 1927, in Pekin, Ill., the son of R.J. and Viola Mae (Saxton) Gordon. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He later served in the U.S. Army. He married Delores Davis in November of 1947 in Pekin. She preceded him in death on August 14, 1998.

Charles worked at the John Deere Foundry, retiring in 1987, following 21 years of service to the company. He was a member of the Rock Island Conservation Club, member and Post Commander twice of VFW Post 1303, Rock Island, and member of American Legion Post 569, Milan.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen (David) Merchant, Sulligent, Ala.; sons, Charles Gordon, Jr., Rock Island, and Walter Lee (Sharon) Gordon, Davenport; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Delores, his parents, several brothers, and one sister preceded him in death.
