Alfred J. Metko, of Mattoon, WI, passed away Thursday, December 9, 2004, at The Homme Home of Wittenberg, just 8 days before his 90th birthday. He was born on December 17, 1914, in the Township of Hutchins, near Mattoon, WI, the son of the late William and Wilhelmina (Schattl) Metko.

On March 27, 1934, he married Margaret A. Johnson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Appleton, WI. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Mattoon area until the late 1980's. He also worked at the Wisconsin Timber and Land Company-Wisconsin Veneer and Plywood in Mattoon for over 45 years.

He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Mattoon, and the Holy Name Society. He served as supervisor and town chairman on the Hutchins Town Board for 22 years, from 1967 to 1989; was on the Shawano County Board for 18 years, from April 22, 1976 to August 1, 1994; and ran for State Assembly about 1985. He enjoyed picnics with his family. He will be remembered as a very hard worker and for his dry sense of humor.

Survivors include eleven children; 32 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Herres and Minnie Beck, both of Appleton; four sisters-in-law, Connie Metko, Menasha, Bernice Stuyvenberg and Lois Eickhoff, both of Kimberly, and Virginia Johnson, Weyauwega; one brother-in-law, Thomas (Marion) Johnson, Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Margaret, who passed away in March 2002; a daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Metko; a grandson, Mark Metko; a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Burg; five brothers, Willie, Frank, Otto, Bill and Herman; two sisters, Mary Ann Metko and Betty Miller; numerous in-laws; in addition to his parents.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 NOON on Monday, December 13, 2004, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Phlox. The Rev. David Kiefer and Deacon Tom Hartman will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, town of Hutchins, Shawano County.
