Rock river claimed another victim here, when Robert Bath, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Bath, drowned at the swimming beach on Wednesday afternoon.
Robert, who was unable to swim, sought relief from the heat, and was wading on the north side of the park bridge. A storm sewer enters the river near that point, and has washed a hole in the river bed. The little boy apparently stepped into the hole and sank from sight.
Several little boys playing in the river nearby saw him disappear. The word was passed along, but some time elapsed before Mrs. Ruth Price Rye and Robert Jakoubek, the Red Cross swimming instructors, were aware of the tragedy.
Two local girls, who had passed the lifesaving tests, immediately began a search for Robert, but Jakoubek finally found the body on its back in the deep hole.
Jakoubek immediately started artificial respiration, assisted by Carl Muench and Rudolph Hartwig. Dr. A. E. Bachhuber was summoned, but all efforts to revive the boy failed and after two hours, Dr. Bachhuber declared further efforts would be hopeless.
Robert was born in this city on June 24, 1922. He was known to quite a few people here, since he was a newspaper carrier. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Bath, and his brothers and sister, Jerome, Andrew, Richard, and Marion, all at home.
Last rites were held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church. The Rev. R. A. Kramer officiated, and burial was held in the new parish cemetery.
