OLDEST WOMAN IN BERKS DIES AT SCHLOSSBERG
Late Mrs. Hannah Dankel was within three days of 100 years of age.
Shamrock, May 1 - Mrs. Hannah Dankel, of Schlossberg, Longswamp township, who passed away at her home, was said to be the oldest woman in Berks. She was within three days of being 100 years old. Deceased was a daughter of David Fegely, and wife, Susannah (nee Gaumer), and was born on May 2, 1815 in Longswamp township, Berks county. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith early in life. Some 75 years ago she was married to David Dankel on Christmas Day by Rev. John Helfrich. The union was without children. Her husband died more than 40 years ago. There were six brothers and two sisters: Benjamin, Jesse, Evan, James and David and Mrs. Lydia and Hettie, all of whom have passed away many years ago.
She loved to read her Bible and her devotional books until her sight failed. Time from then on seemed very lonely. She was fond of telling her experiences in childhood days, concerning which she had a good memory only a few years ago. She saw this broad valley before it was traversed by railroad trains and studded with towns and farmhouses. It was literally a long swamp. It was a pleasure to hear her talk of old times.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, May 4, at 1 p.m., at the house of Constantine Fretz, with whom she had made her home for many years. Interment at Longswamp Church.
