Mrs. W.H. Montague Dies at Age of 78

Mrs. W. H. Montague Sr., who has been quite ill for several months, died Thursday night, May 24th, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Walter Montague, Jr. with whom she had made her home for some time.

Mrs. Montague was a pioneer citizen of this county having resided here for many years. She was born in Missouri in 1850, and came to Texas when she was quite young. In 1868 she was married unto W. H. Montague, who preceded her in death about four years ago.

Mrs. Montague was a devoted mother, a faithful friend and a consistent member of the Christian church. Her remains were laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery Friday afternoon. Rev. A.S. Broaddus conducted the services.

Mrs. Montague is survived by the following three daughters and a sister: Mrs. J. E. Carroll, Mrs. R. C. Ryan of Caldwell, and Mrs. J. D. Newcomb of Goose Creek and Mrs. W. S. Sullivan of Caldwell, sister. Besides these three daughters and sister she is survived by several grand and great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Floyd Neal and family, Marline, Mrs. Thos. Broaddus and Drew Sullivan of Beaumont.

Note:

Columbia died in 1928 and was buried in Masonic Cemetery in Burleson County with her husband (Walter) who preceded her in death (1923). However, to date their headstones/markers have never been located. The cemetery also has no records for their burial, despite death certificates and obituaries clearly showing their interment. I believe the mystery may have been solved, when it was observed there is an empty plot located next to their son (Robert) who is also buried in this cemetery. I believe this is most likely where they rest. But as for why there is no marker or what happened to it if there was — who knows. It remains a mystery.
