Allan Donald Hugh Bartelt, a retired engineer and local businessman, died on December 7, at the Hospice of the Piedmont, Martha Jefferson Hospital. He had undergone cancer treatments for over a year.

Mr. Bartelt was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 17, 1908. In 1930, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Following several depression-era engineering jobs, he returned to Madison to earn a Master of Philosophy in education, then worked for six years as a vocational school teacher.

A former naval officer and veteran of World War II, Allan Bartelt spent the years 1943 to 1945 at the Navy Department of Ordnance in Washington, D.C. While there, he served as supervisory electronics engineer on the design of several important radar and missile guidance projects. He then joined the Sperry Corp., coming to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1956 as a manager of its Marine Systems plant on U.S. 29 north.

Retiring from Sperry in 1972, Mr. Bartelt occupied his later years as an owner and principal of Sycamore House/Studio Art Shop, a longtime fixture on West Main Street. With his wife and middle son, he presided over a period of dramatic growth in that business, comprising many successful expansions, remodelings, and the opening of branch stores in Harrisonburg and Winchester.

He continued to enjoy gardening, photography, travel, genealogy and attending music and art events. His professional activities included membership in the American Society of Naval Engineers and service on the board of the Virginia Engineering Foundation.

Allen Bartelt's survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rita H. Bartelt of Charlottesville; three sons, Richard Bartelt of Portland, Oregon, John Bartelt of Charlottesville, and James Bartelt of Heidelberg, Germany; a sister, Gertrude Janos of Cincinnati; and two granddaughters, Barbara Damon of Seattle and Sandra Bartelt of Portland, Oregon.

Interment was at Monticello Memorial Park.
