She was a daughter of Anthony Garnett Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth M. Smith Smith of Upson and Talbot Counties, Georgia. She married Edmund Jackson Smith.

Martha Johanna Smith (Oct. 23, 1856-Dec. 11, 1933) was the daughter of Anthony
Garnett Smith, Jr. (1809-1891) and Elizabeth Mary Smith (1823-1902), pioneers
of Upson and Talbot counties.

On May 20, 1875, according to her parents' family Bible, Martha Johanna Smith
married a relative, Edmund Jackson Smith (Apr. 13, 1850-Jan. 9, 1919). He was
the son of Cary Hull Smith and Sarah Amanda Jackson Smith. Martha J. and
Edmund J. Smith were members of the Antioch Methodist Church of Thomaston.

Around 1918, Edmund J. and Martha Johanna Smith moved to Fulton County,
Georgia. Their children were Mary Elizabeth Smith Bryan (1876-1912), Garnett
Hull Smith (1878-1965), Claud Daniel Smith (1881-1955), Emmie Jackson Gordy
(1887-1971), Lucile Parks Smith Grubb (1889-1982), and Sarah Evelyn Smith
(1894-1982).

The Smith family is appreciative to Mr. Claude C. Burgess of the Thomaston-
Upson Archives for locating the following obituary in the Thomaston Times on
Jan. 17, 1919:

"Mr. Ed. J. Smith Killed By Atlanta Street Car

The people of Upson county were greatly shocked and saddened by the sudden and
untimely death of Mr. E. J. Smith which occured [sic] at East Point last
Thursday. He was run over and killed by a street car. His body was brought to
Thomaston Friday and the remains were intered [sic] at Antioch church Saturday
morning at 10 o'clock, the funeral being conducted by Rev. M. S. Williams,
pastor Thomaston Methodist church. A large number of sorrowing relatives and
friends attended the exercises.

Until a few months ago Mr. Smith was a resident of this county when he moved
to Hapeville to make his home with his son, Mr. G. H. Smith. He was one of
Upson's most highly respected and best beloved citizens. He had been a
citizen of this county for many years having served as Justice of the Peace in
the Delray district for a long time. He was a member of Antioch church and
was one of the leaders of that congregation.

The following account of the death appeared in the Atlanta Journal Friday:

Struck by an outgoing East Point street car on Ware avenue, opposite the sub-
station of the Georgia Railway and Power company, E. J. Smith, sixty eight
years old, of Hapeville, was instantly killed at 6 o'clock Thursday night.

It was stated by officials of the power company that Mr. Smith crossed the
track in front of an incoming car and did not see the outgoing car.... The
body is now at the chapel of Greenberg & Bond.

Mr. Smith was in the employ of the leather department of Couch Brothers
Manufacturing company, at East Point. He came here about two months ago from
Thomaston, Ga. He is survived by his widow; two sons, G. H. Smith, who is
employed at the consolidated ticket offices in Atlanta, and C. D. Smith, of
Thomaston, and three daughters, Mrs. Douglas Gordy, of Perry, Ga., Mrs. Paul
Grubb, of Thomaston, and Miss Evelyn Smith, of Hapeville. - Atlanta Journal.

The relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the people of Upson county
in their bereavement."

Edmund Jackson Smith, Martha Johanna Smith, and many descendants are buried in
the Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery in Thomaston. Mr. Daniel A. Brown, a
descendant, presently resides in the home of Edmund J. and Martha Johanna
Smith located in Thomaston.
