Mr. Eugene Douglas Atkinson, Jr., 82, of Winston-Salem died Monday, February 21, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 19, 1928, the son of the late Eugene Douglas Atkinson, Sr. and Annie bailey Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He was a patrolman with the NC Highway Patrol for 5 years before becoming owner and operator of Salem Tree Service. He was a graduate of Greenville High School in Greenville, SC and attended Clemson University. He served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Lacy Atkinson and his brother, Raymond Atkinson. Survivors include one daughter, Jane Willis and husband, Daniel Livengood of Mocksville; two sons, Stephen Atkinson of Mooresville and David Atkinson and wife, Jodi of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Christal Willis of Mocksville, Christian Atkinson of Mooresville and Ian Atkinson of Nashville, TN and his former son-in-law, Wesley Willis of Mocksville. A military graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Pastor C. John Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. The family would like to say a special thank you to Betsy Braise of Salem Family Practice, Dr. John Powderley and staff, and the E. R. nurses at Forsyth Medical Center.
