Mr. Billy E. Darby, 87, passed away Feb. 22, 2011, at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Florence, attended Florence City School and was a graduate of Florence State College (UNA). He served during World War II as a combat medic with the 172nd infantry regiment, 43rd infantry division in the South Pacific. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence.
Visitation with the family will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the graveside, Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, with the graveside service beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Park. Dr. Ric Camp and the Rev. Kevin Johnson will be officiating.
Mr. Darby was preceded in death by his son, Richard Darby; mother, Leona Thrasher Darby; father, Edgar T. Darby; brothers, Claude, T.E., Harold Ellis; and sister, Elsie Darby Vessell.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Nesbitt Darby; son, Phillip Darby (Chris); grandchildren, Justin, Josh and Jill, of Nashville, Tenn., Sean Darby, of Venice, Fla., Tara Darby, of Santa Monica, Calif., Ricardo and Isabella Darby, of Brazil.
Pallbearers will be Mike Ashcraft, John Riedel, Franklin Hine, Glenn Austin, Justin Darby and Sean Darby.
Honorary pallbearers will be the management and all employees of Darby Doors – R.G. Darby Company and Total Trim.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Florence, Ala., or a charity of your choice.
