Dr. Meikle set her mind on attending college as a young girl interested in all things scientific. At the age of 15, she was awarded a full scholarship to Vassar and graduated in 1954 with a degree in mathematics.

Two years later, she moved to Portland with her first husband and young son, Rick. and continued her math studies at the University of Portland and the University of Washington. She changed academic fields and earned her PhD in physiological psychology from what is now Oregon Health and Sciences University at the age of 35.

After two years spent as a research fellow, she became a faculty member in the otolaryngology department, and started almost four decades of research into hearing and hearing-related disorders. She retired as a Professor of Otolaryngology and Medical Psychiatry at OHSU in 1998. She was also the Founder and Project Director of the Tinnitus Data Archive and Registry Program.

It was time for her to join her colleague and second husband, Dr. Jack Allen Vernon (founder of the Oregon Hearing Research Center at OHSU), who had retired in 1996.
When Jack and Mary weren't living the "good Life" and entertaining on their beloved Sauvie Island houseboat, Mary spent many hours "volunteering" at OHSU and the clinic. Jack volunteered every Friday at the clinic until shortly before his death in November of 2010.

Until Mary's death from ALS almost three months later, she was working on the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) to submit for publication by the editors of Ear and Hearing in a final effort to improve the lives of tinnitus patients. At Mary's request, no funeral or memorial services were held. She truly was Jack's equal, a partner in life, love, professional endeavors and now, in death.
