Man Charged With Murder Shot By Mob In Own Home

GROVETON, Texas, March 16 - Frank Johnson, tenant farmer, charged with the murder of Homer Gibson at Center Point, fifteen miles north of here Friday, was dragged from his bed in his home near that place late Monday night and shot to death by a party of unidentified men.

Johnson was under arrest for the slaying of Gibson but had been to badly cut in the affray at the school house that he had been left under surveillance at his home until physicians should advise that he was able to be moved. His throat had been badly slashed and other wounds inflicted.

Johnson was in bed with his baby when his slayers burst their way into the room. Realizing what they came for he begged them not to kill him there with the baby. So the men took hold of his feet, dragged him out of bed and as he fell onto the floor shot him to death.

Sheriff's guards and friends of Johnson both had been about the Johnson residence Monday night and had been in his home a short time prior to the killing, but he had told them that he could not sleep with them present and had asked that they leave him alone. A short time after they did so the party who killed him appeared, according to reports.

As far as could be learned here no one recognized the slayers and no one would advance any opinion as to who they were. It is not believed they were masked however and it seems certain Johnson recognized them.

The scene of the shooting is almost on the line between Trinity and Houston counties. In fact it is believed the trouble that led to the killing of Gibson Friday and that of Johnson Monday had its inception in a quarrel over whether the Johnson children were entitled to attend the school at Center Point, which in in this county.
