LEWISTOWN, Mont. — Richard Edwin Paine, 73, of Lewistown, Mont., died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at his home.

Mr. Paine was born July 15, 1937, in Portland and grew up in Lake Oswego, where as a young man he excelled at swimming and sailing. He served his country in the Army's 362nd Combat Engineers 101st Airborne Division, Delta Company as a powder and blaster man. He also was an avid paratrooper.

In 1957 he moved to Heppner and got a job working at the Wilkinson Ranch, where he met his future wife Judith Cochell Wilkinson. They were married for 34 years.

He worked as a cowboy, sold life insurance for many years and worked in real estate. He and his family also owned Wolf Ridge Ranch in northern Idaho, where they raised registered Appaloosas and Appaloosa/Quarter Horses.

Survivors include Judith Paine Shannon of Lake Stevens, Wash.; son Shawn Paine of Crofton, Md.; daughter Nancy Paine of Marysville, Wash.; brother David Paine of Corvallis; and five grandchildren.

Cloyd Funeral Home in Lewistown, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.
