Anna de Launay was born in the Queen's Barracks at Ipswich, Suffolk, England as "Anna Augusta Ollerenshaw", daughter of Mark Ollerenshaw (born 17 Apr 1814 England, died 19 Dec 1893) and Hannah H Armstrong (born 30 Apr 1818, died 8 Oct 1881). After Anna and Jules married on 5 Oct 1876 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Anna began to feel the need to compete socially and began telling people that her maiden name was St. George-Armstrong. A copy of her marriage certificate showing Jules as her husband, and Mark and Hannah as her parents, proves otherwise.

Her siblings were: Thomas, and John (each born in Ireland), James, Elizabeth, Corah, and Robert (each born in Ontario), and Lillian and Joseph (birth place unsure). Joseph served in the U.S. Cavalry and died in Wyoming on 5 Jan 1884. Lillian Ollerenshaw married A. Fraser, had a son Frank Fraser, and she died on 23 Dec 1897 in Embro, Ontario.
