Entertainer. An Austrian singer and actor, nicknamed "Peter the Great" by his fans, he came to symbolize his country's return to prosperity after World War II with his wit and charm. Alexander first rose to fame in the 1950s with appearances in dozens of film comedies and and scores successful recordings. He parodied the vocal styles of many famous German-language singers, including Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich, and Hans Moser. He also performed with Leila Negra and Louis Armstrong. Alexander later established himself as an acclaimed host of television shows. His career as a live singer touring the German language countries lasted until 1991, while he continued his television work until 1996. The performer spent his retirement years in seclusion. At Alexander's death, Chancellor Werner Faymann hailed him as a "great Austrian."
