Anthropologist. Alfred L. Kroeber was an illustrious anthropologist who studied Native Americans, founded the subfield of environmental anthropology, and founded the prestigious Department of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley. Among his many publications were the books Cultural and Natural Areas of Native North America, Handbook of the Indians of California, and Anthropology: Race, Language, Culture, Psychology, Prehistory. He became famous for saving Ishi, the last of the Yahi Indians and bringing Ishi to live at the UC Museum of Anthropology. During Kroeber's lifetime, he was known as the "Dean of American Anthropologists."
