MAINE MARINE DIES IN BATTLE
Captain Emerson E. Mason of the U.S. Marines, formerly of Jefferson, was killed in action according to information received by his wife from the government Tuesday. Details as to location and nature of his death were withheld.
Captain Mason was born July 13, 1911 in Hingham, Mass., the son of Mrs. Marjorie Mason now of Portland and the late E.E. Mason. Later he came to Maine and lived for some time in Jefferson. He went to the Officers' Training School at Quantico, Va., in 1939 and 1940. Following that he was in Cuba for six months on peace time maneuvers.
On his return he was stationed at Parris Island, S.C. and in 1941 was transferred to New River, N.C. He was on duty also at Lakehurst, N.J., where he was graduated as a Marine Corps parachutist. In the spring of 1942 Captain Mason went to Washington D.C., where he studied aerial photography interpretation. Returning to New River, Captain Mason was made an intelligence officer in the parachute battalion.
Two years ago Captain Mason married Miss Barbara O. Pernette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell N. Pernette of North Shore, Lake Cobbosseecontee and 142 Grove Street, Augusta. She is with her parents at the Lake and the family was joined Tuesday by Mrs. Marjorie Mason, the late Captain Mason's mother. He was an only son.
Captain Mason was a member of the Jefferson Lodge of Masons and the Sojourners, a Masonic order.
