Della Cook, born on 14 August 1877, at Mendota, Illinois and she died on 29 August 1974, at the home of their daughter Fern (née Emch) Berry at Roanoke in Huntington County, Indiana. She was buried next to Bert in the Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke. Della was the daughter of Walter Seymour Cook (1849–1931) and his wife, Gertrude Lavena McCollum (1850–1922). Della married on 29 December 1897, Wayne in Wayne County, Nebraska James Herbert "Bert" Emch (1877-1973). She had attended the Wayne Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska with plans to become a teacher. However, her marriage to Bert ended that as most school districts forbid their teachers to marry in those days. In 1906, Bert and Della homesteaded in Roosevelt Township in what was then Morton County and later Grant County, 2 miles northwest of Leith, North Dakota. Della became the town midwife and regularly assisted during many of the birthings around Leith. During the 1918 Influenza Epidemic she helped the town doctor, Dr. Loren Zen, and stayed out at her brother-in-law Franklin P. Emch's place when his wife, Lucy, came down with a fatal case of the flu. Della was very active in the community and helped organize the first Sunday school and church in town, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Soon afterward retiring from farming and moving into Leith, Della began serving as the Post Mistress of Leith. A post she held for 18 years, 1929 – 1947, until she retired at age 70 years. In 1970, Bert and Della moved east to Roanoke, in Huntington County, Indiana to be near their daughter, Fern. Their union of Bert and Della produced the following children:
Lois Emch (1899-1922).
Glenn C. Emch (1900-1995).
Keith Emch (1902-1978).
Fern (nee Emch) Berry (1907-1995).
Nellie Lucille (nee Emch) Hauge (1909-1992).
James Herbert "Herbie" Emch, Jr. (1911-1922).
Catherine Emch (1914-1924).
