January 5th 1979 Connie and her four kids (Cameo 12, Nelson 10, Heath 8, and Carmen 6 years old) were heading home (west) on Washington Rd. The cars were only traveling about 40 mph because the roads were still bad. School was cancelled due to the weather. A young man attempted to pass a car that was behind a snow plow and collided with Connie and her kids. Connie (mom) died on impact, Cameo sustained facial injuries, broken arms and some severe lacerations, Nelson had a broken jaw and head trauma leaving him in a coma for two weeks, and Heath had not as severe injuries with a broken femur and some internal injuries, and Carmen crawled out of the car sustaining some cuts and a sprained ankle. It took the Jaws of Life to get the rest of us out.

My mother received her diploma in the mail from Alma College after the car accident. She had a business in Ithaca called the Yard Stick and was happily married to my dad for 13 years.
