Kristian Hillberg Karlsen Bangsund was two years old when he arrived in the United States with his mother and sisters in 1889 to join his father in Grant County, Minnesota. One year later his mother and the children returned to Norway. In 1903, at the age of 16, he independently returned to the U.S. to be with his father in Two Harbors, Lake, Minnesota. He worked for the Duluth, Mesabi, and Iron Range Railroad as a laborer. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW I. He was married to Christine Pauline Nyland in about 1924, but they were later divorced or the marriage was annulled about six months later. He lived his remaining years in Two Harbors.
