DR. GENE PHILLIPS dies on Wednesday

Dr. Gene E. Phillips, 75, died suddenly at his home on Route 1, Scipio, early Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be at the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene at 2:00 p. m. Saturday. Rev. Ralph Lee pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery at Columbus. Friends may call at the Dove Funeral Home from seven to nine Friday evening. The body will lie in state at the church after nine Saturday morning.
Born in Coshocton, OH, August 25, 1902, Dr. Phillips was the son of the late Wilbur and Grace Slack Phillips. He was a 1925 graduate of Asbury College. A minister in the Nazarene Church, he served as district superintendent for the Indianapolis district from 1944 to 1948 and in similar post in the state of Iowa from 1948 to 1970. Since 1970 he has beeen an evangelist for the Nazarene Church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Inez Perry, whom he married September 12, 1928 in Coshocton, OH; two sons Rev. Gene Phillips, Des Moines, IA and Rondall Phillips, Alamosa, CO; two daughters, Virginia Friend, Martinsville and Leah Dell Dick, Norman, OK; three sisters Bess Perfson Johannasburg, South Africa, Leila Phillips and Frances Rehfeldt, both of Greenfield; a brother Fred Phillips, Bogota, Columbia, and 14 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Nazarene Missionary Fund in care of the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene.

He joined the Nazarene Church in 1925 and became a minister of that faith. In 1944 he was elected to the Superintendency of the Indianapolis District of the Nazarene Church and in 1948 to the Superintendency of the Iowa District.
He was strong and healthy up until the time of his death. He died of a heart attack.
On the day of his death, he had been working in the yard, mowing, and came to rest in his chair. He complained of having chest pains. That night he and Inez went to the visitation of a 19-year-old boy that had died. One the way home--it was a beautiful moonlit night--Gene said, "Wouldn't this be a nice night for the Lord to come." And that night the Lord came for him.
