-------------
He joined the Nazarene Church in 1925 and became a minister of that faith. In 1944 he was elected to the Superintendency of the Indianapolis District of the Nazarene Church and in 1948 to the Superintendency of the Iowa District.
He was strong and healthy up until the time of his death. He died of a heart attack.
On the day of his death, he had been working in the yard, mowing, and came to rest in his chair. He complained of having chest pains. That night he and Inez went to the visitation of a 19-year-old boy that had died. One the way home--it was a beautiful moonlit night--Gene said, "Wouldn't this be a nice night for the Lord to come." And that night the Lord came for him.
