Ms. Ann Shapard's Obit:

" A Christian spirit has changed it's habitation. The sweet and gentle spirit of Aunt Annie has finished it's labor of love on earth and returned to the God who gave it. She had almost lived the allotted span of three score and ten and lived it in the fear of God and in the service of His people. Life to her was not a veil of tears but a land of golden opportunity for the performance of good deeds. Since earliest childhood, for almost 50 years, I have held her as the highest type of Christian character. Every attribute of pure and perfect Christian womanhood found expression in her daily ways and conversation.
What greater thing can I say than this - she led my feet to the cross of Christ. But she is gone for her mission accomplished is o'er.
She died as she had loved - at peace. Texas is a better state because of her influence and every life she touched throbbed with a noble impulse.
Miss Annie Shapard was born in Washington County, Texas August 31, 1852. She began teaching when about 16 years of age. Later she attended Sam Houston Normal Institute at Huntsville, Texas, from which she graduated with highest honors, being the valedictorian of her class. She was also awarded the Peabody medal. Besides many years spent in the country schools, she taught four years or more in the city schools of Austin, Texas.
In her early womanhood she professed Christianity and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. During the latter years of her life she made her church home with the Methodist in which she was known as an indefatigable worker.
She resided in various places in the state, but the last 15 years had been spent in Comanche and Anson, Texas. She passed away on 5th day of March in Anson, Texas.

Two sisters, Mrs. M. J. Eanes, and Mrs. Katie Thomson, and one brother Dr. R. R. Shapard, besides numerous other relatives, survive here. Thousand of her former pupils, comrades and friends throughout the state will mourn her."
