Effie was born near Weatheby, Missouri on Oct. 30, 1887. She was the daughter of John Alexander and Harriet (Searcy) Coulson, farmers living in the Adams Township of DeKalb County, Missouri. Effie was the 7th of 8 siblings.

In the 1890's most of Effie's family died of what is believed to be an outbreak of Tuberculosis. Only Effie and two sisters survived, one of these died shortly after.

Effie was united in Marriage to James Fitzgerald on November 28, 1906 at the M. E. Church, South, in Maysville, MO. Effie and James spent their married life in communities in NW Missouri.

To their union, 3 daughters were born.

Effie and James were prominent in community affairs in the DeKalb county area, primarily in Weatherby. James served a four year term as the treasurer of DeKalb county. During his term the family lived in Maysville.

Effie's obituary attests to her character and industriousness with the following comment; "Mrs Fitzgerald was a true Christian woman, loyal to her church and was a participant in all its affairs. She took part in community affairs as long as her health would permit."

After a brief illness, Effie died on Sept 27, 1944 at the Missouri Methodist Hospital in St Joseph, Missouri. James and Effie are laid to rest side by side in the Shambaugh and Cope cemetary near Weatherby.
