J. M. BULLOCK DIES AT HOME OF SON HERE
Methodist Circuit Rider of Olden Days Dies Last Friday

J. M. Bullock, age 83, died at the home of his son, N. M. Bullock, on East Cameron Street at an early hour last Friday morning, following an illness of about ten days. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at 10 o'clock by W. A. Craven, pastor of the First Methodist Church, interment following in the New City Cemetery.

The death of Mr. Bullock removes another of the old landmarks of Milam County, and closes one of the most interesting careers of any heralded among the pioneers of this section.

Decedent was born in Alabama and came to Texas at the age of 18 years. After two years in Grimes county he moved to Milam County, and for 63 years he was a citizen here. Following the death of his wife about ten years ago, Mr. Bullock has made his home with his children, and for the past two years with his son in Rockdale.

For thirty years J. M. Bullock preached the gospel of Christ as a Methodist circuit rider, supplying the rural pulpits of Milam and adjoining counties. At the same time he pursued the occupation of a farmer in this country, and it is said that during the entire thirty years so spent he never received a regular salary. He only gave up preaching when the infirmities of age made it impossible to follow so strenuous a life.

Mr. Bullock was the father of fourteen children, eleven of who are living, and nine of whom were present for his funeral. Also surviving him are 132 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Children here for the funeral were: N. M. Bullock, Rockdale; I. B., L. M., and A. C. Bullock, Breckenridge; C. T. Bullock, Temple; Mrs. Effie Burton, Cincinatti, Ohio: Mrs. Katie Boatman, Waco; also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ed Bullock, of Post City. Two sons, Hubert and Huey, of Kilgore, did not receive news of their father's death in time to arrive, both being workers in the East Texas oil fields.
