In the death of Fred O. Bartlett, which occurred at his home in Jay on Thursday night of last week, Essex county lost one of its best known and most highly esteemed residents. Born at Upper Jay, New York, March 6, 1862, Mr. Bartlett spent practically his entire life in the Ausable Valley, where he had a friend in every resident who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was a man of the highest mentality, a fact recognized by residents of the town of Jay, who frequently chose him as their representative in public office, having been elected as supervisor of the town and a justice of the peace, he having served in the latter office for many years, thus accumulating wide legal knowledge and as a result he was frequently called upon for advice in matters of a legal character, and the advice given was always of the best. He was a member of Tahawus Lodge, F. & A. M., and Oriental Temple of Troy, and also of Whiteface Grange and the Pomona Grange, in all of which organizations he took an active interest.

About a year ago Mr. Bartlett sustained a fall, resulting in serious injury to one of his legs, and for this reason he had been less active than formerly, although his mental faculties remained as bright as in his younger years. On Thursday of last week, feeling unusually well he went to Elizabethtown on business and to visit old friends, returning home in the afternoon bright and happy. He retired that night apparently in his usual health, and was found dead in his bed the following morning, having passed away during the night without the slightest struggle. His funeral was held Sunday afternoon and was one of the largest ever held in the town of Jay, neighbors and friends coming from all parts of Northern New York to pay a last tribute of respect to a kind neighbor and faithful friend.
