EDENS, Walter Alexander, died January 19, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. He was born February 18, 1919 in Petersburg, Virginia and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1940, where he was Regimental Commander of the Cadet Corps. Edens served with a regular commission in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1962, when he retired as Colonel. He served with the 70th Division during WWII in France and remained in Germany following the war as part of the Constabulary. Returning to the states, Edens served as a part of the Regular Army unit serving as ROTC instructors to the Corps at his beloved VMI. Other important Army assignments included 2nd Field Artillery Battalion (Pack) in Ft. Clayton, Panama, the Army War College, the Army Command and General Staff School, and the Pentagon, where he served on the Secretary of the Army's commission to reorganize the Army. In August 1962, Edens retired from the Army and joined State Planters Bank in their Trust Department. He remained with that bank for 21 years and through three name changes. He attended the National Trust School at Northwestern University and was president of the Class of '71. Edens retired from Crestar (currently SunTrust) bank in 1983 as a vice president in charge of Trust Administration. During his retirement, Edens was active in his church and served on the vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer as junior warden, senior warden and a trustee of the church. In 1986, he became a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and served on the vestry there. He also served eight years as a board member and treasurer of the Shepherd Center. Edens is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dorothy Leimbach Edens; three children, Joanne E. Theon of McLean, Va., Susan E. Musselman of Apollo, Pa., and Walter A. Edens Jr. of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be made through Bliley Funeral Home, with a funeral service at Grace and Holy Trinity and burial in Arlington National Cemetery (dates are pending). In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either the Virginia Military Institute Foundation's Edens Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, Va. or the Wounded Warriors Project assisting families of disabled soldiers.
