U.S. Congressman. He graduated from La Grange Junior College, in 1901, from the law department of the University of Missouri, in 1908 and was a professor of history, at Stephens College Missouri, (1904-08). Admitted to the bar in 1908, he commenced to practice law in Troy, Missouri, in 1911. He became a clerk in the office for the Speaker of the House of U.S. Representatives, serving (1915-20). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the next twenty succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 85. The Clarence Cannon Memorial Airport in Kirksville, Missouri, was named in his honor.
