Born near Dumfries, Scotland, Captain James Campbell came to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, probably about 1772/73.

Historical records cited in the research of Elizabeth Campbell Thompson show that he served as Captain of the "Enterprize" during the Revolution, afterward settling in Alexandria, Virginia. His home, with 2nd wife Kitty, was on Cameron Street at #313. Record of his time as Captain of the Enterprize can be seen at:
USS ENTERPRISE II

His 1st wife Leah, who died at age 59 in October 1803, is interred in Christ Church Graveyard.

Captain Campbell's descendants are numerous, and many were notable citzens and operated important businesses in the Alexandria community.

Captain Campbell's 5th Great-grandson,
John William Varney, IV
had extended the research of Mrs. Thompson in the months prior to his death and interment in Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, in January 2001.
