From the Oregonian, 10 Dec. 1943:

Ex-Oregonian Man Missing.

Navy Department Notifies Mother.

Ensign Richard F. Scholz, navy torpedo bomber pilot, is missing following action in performance of duty, the navy department notified his mother, Mrs. Cheryl M. Scholz of Portland. No further details are now available, it was said.

Ensign Scholz is one of three sons of Mrs. Scholz and the late Dr. Richard F. Scholz, former president of Reed College. All three won their wings and commissions as navy pilots. The two brothers, Ensigns Gerald R. Scholz and Robert M. Scholz, are both on active duty.

Wings Won in 1942.

The missing navy flier, a graduate of Reed College, formerly was a reporter on The Oregonian. Later, before entering the navy for flight training in March of 1942, he was a member of the staff of the Washington News and of Time magazine. He won his wings at Corpus Christi, Tex., in November of 1942.

Ensign Scholz returned to Portland in January of this year for a visit before reporting at San Diego, Cal., for assignment to a carrier squadron.

His mother, who was formerly dean of women at Reed College, is now a member of the faculty there.

NOTE: Ensign Scholz is buried at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, memorial #65247433. This lovely stone is in memory.
