Private William Anderson Co. I, 47th N.C. Inf. is located in the Historic Oakwood Cemetery Section: Anderson, Division: I, Lot: 3, Plot: 3 just under or beside the large Marble/Granite obelisk monument marker for his brother Brigadier General George Burgwyn Anderson Lot 3, Plot 1.

Private Anderson was born in Orange County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Granville County at the age of 22, March 4, 1862, reported on guard duty in July - August 1862. He was wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863. He deserted in September 1863 and apprehended on an unspecified date to be court-martialed on or about November 20, 1863. He was returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported presented for duty January - April 1864. He was captured at or near Burgess' Mill, Virginia, October 27, 1864, and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland on October 31, 1864. There he was paroled on or about March 25, 1865. He was sent to and received at Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia on March 30, 1865, for exchange. --Source: N. C. Troops 1861 -1865 Vol XI, Page 341

AFTER THE WAR: According to the 1880 Census for Raleigh, N.C., he was President of the Citizens National Bank in Raleigh. Based on that Census, he was probably born in 1836. He died in May of 1890 at his office in Raleigh. He was also known as Colonel W.E. Anderson.

He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1854 according to Alumni History of the University of North Carolina (1795-1924) Edited by Daniel Lindsey Grant.
